Our team was contracted to design a construction ready automated blowdown heat recovery system at a paper mill in the Northeast.

The scope of contracted services included design and submittal of construction ready P&ID, corresponding equipment submittal sheets, budgeted equipment quotes and bidding instructions for use by the customer to solicit quotes from mechanical contractors for installation and commissioning.

Steam Management, Inc. completed a turnkey steam trap upgrade project in 2003 where, during development of the scope, we observed and alerted our customer to condensate return design deficiencies and proposed solutions. However, the solutions offered to address the systemic condensate issues were not included in the ESPC.

Three years later, we were hired to produce a comprehensive analysis of the condensate return system. The objective of the analysis was to identify system deficiencies and develop construction ready design for improvements necessary to improve condensate return to the Energy Center. 

Performance of a boiler, like efficiency and evaporation ratio reduces with time, due to poor combustion, heat transfer fouling and poor operation and maintenance. Deterioration of fuel quality and water quality also leads to poor performance of a boiler. Efficiency testing helps us find out how far the boiler efficiency drifts away from the best efficiency. Any observed abnormal deviations could therefore be investigated to pinpoint the problem area for necessary corrective action. The steam plant and piping distribution system safety and energy efficiency depends on the system design operation and maintenance.

Large cities, medical complexes and universities that are served by district heating systems have the potential to provide significant water and energy savings for the end users of these systems.

The installation of a digital pressure reducing station, delivers savings by modulating steam pressure based on outside temperatures and building heating demand loads.
